The Large White (Pieris brassicae) is one of two species that can claim the title of Cabbage White and Cabbage Butterfly. The other species is the very similar Small White (Pieris rapae).
The Large White, a butterfly in the family Pieridae, is common throughout Europe, north Africa, and Asia to the Himalayas. It has managed to establish a population in South Africa. This species is found in a wide variety of habitats and can turn up almost anywhere, including gardens, allotments, parks, meadows, open grassland, and hedgerows.
The wings are white, with black tips on the forewings of both males and females, the female also has two black spots on each forewing. The underside is a pale greenish and serves as excellent camouflage when at rest. The black markings are generally darker in the summer brood. Its wingspan is 5 - 7 cm. The butterfly normally has 2 broods each year, and there is often a 3rd brood in warm years.
The Large White can be confused with the Small White (Pieris rapae), but in that species the dark markings are more feint - greyish rather than black - and the wingspan averages only 4 - 5,5 cm, as compared to the 5 - 7 cm of the Large White.

Het groot koolwitje (Pieris brassicae) is een dagvlinder uit de familie Pieridae (de witjes) en heeft een spanwijdte 5 à 7 cm. De generaties verschillen van elkaar doordat de eerste generatie vrouwtjes twee duidelijk zwarte stippen heeft, terwijl die bij de tweede generatie (in warme jaren drie generaties) zijn versmolten tot een zwarte band op de voorvleugel. De mannetjes van de eerste generatie hebben een donkere vleugeltip en twee grijze stippen en bij de tweede generatie zijn die twee stippen zwart.
Het groot koolwitje komt in grote delen van Europa, noord Afrika en in Azië tot de Himalaya voor. De vlinder stelt geen specifieke eisen aan zijn leefgebied. Het groot koolwitje vliegt van zeeniveau tot 2600 meter hoogte in berggebied. De vliegtijd is van maart tot en met oktober.
De rupsen kunnen een ware plaag vormen bij de teelt van kool. In korte tijd kunnen ze door hun vraat veel schade toebrengen.
Het groot koolwitje is van het sterk gelijkende klein koolwitje (Pieris rapae) te onderscheiden door de relatief grote hoeveelheid zwart in de vleugelpunt. Ook is het klein koolwitje met 4 à 5,5 cm kleiner.
